Kyger Bakery Products, Inc. a division of Harlan Bakeries, Inc., wins nine First Place Blue Ribbons in the 2004 American Pie Council / Crisco National Pie Championships.

Avon, Indiana - KBPI won nine first place blue ribbons at The American Pie Council/Crisco National Pie Championships. The Pie Championships, which took place in conjunction with the Great American Pie Festival, was held in Celebration, Florida, on April 16, 2004.

Two hundred and eighty-five pies were entered in this year’s family group, commercial division. Within the family group, there were 20 competitive flavor categories. Kyger’s Cherry, Mixed Berry, Peach, Pecan, Chocolate Crème, Coconut Crème, and Lemon Meringue pies, were all awarded blue ribbons in their respective flavor categories, in the family group of the commercial Division. In the No-Sugar-Added Family Group, Kyger’s Mixed Berry and Peach pies also won first place recognition.

“We are very proud of our strong showing at this year Pie Championships,” stated Joe Latouf, President of KBPI. “It was great winning three ribbons last year, but to see our team improve upon it the way they did, shows our determination and our commitment to continuously upgrade our product quality.”

According to Linda Hoskins, Executive Director of the American Pie Council, “The quality and competition of the Pie Championships is increasing at a rapid rate. With the tougher competition level, Kyger’s increase to nine wins compared to three wins last year is quite significant. We are seeing the opposite happen for other companies as the competition continues to grow fierce.”

The American Pie Council has been sponsoring The National Pie Championships since 1995. Amateur pie makers, professional bakers/chefs and commercial pie companies come from around the country and Canada to compete. According to the APC corporate website, “The APC has created a standard of quality in pie making on all levels.”

Harlan Bakeries, Inc., established in 1991, produces Harlan Bigger Better Bagels and Harlan Giant Gourmet Bagels brands, private-label bagels, contract manufacturing, and products for in-store bakeries. Harlan now produces more than just bagels. Harlan Bakeries operates four production facilities. This includes its 200,000+ square foot flagship facility and corporate office in Avon, Indiana. Other plants are located in Indianapolis, Indiana (pie and cake production); Denver, Colorado (bagel production); and Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada (fruit pie production).
