Added Processors," magazine award of FOOD PLANTS OF THE YEAR.
Avon, Indiana - Harlan
Bakeries, Inc. has the distinguished honor of being
recognized as one of six food plants in the nation to
win the award of FOOD PLANTS OF THE YEAR
by the "Refrigerated & F rozen Foods Solutions for Value-Added
Processors" a magazine of the Stagnito Communications
Inc. an MWC Company, April 2003 edition.
The bakery was noted for its teamwork
approach, safety record and productivity. In the article
titled, “Hoosiers” they stated, “Remember
the movie, “Hoosiers?” It was a story of
how teamwork and fundamentals earned a 1953 state high
school basketball title for little known Milan, Ind.
Today there is an equally intriguing story of Hoosiers.
Since its 1990 founding by brothers Hugh and Doug Harlan,
privately held Harlan Bakeries, Inc., Avon, Ind., has
emerged as a leader in the highly competitive frozen
bakery food market.”
The article further highlights the
company’s good compensation package for employees;
the five year running Superior rating by the American
Institute of Baking; the Indiana Chamber of Commerce
Safety Award; the continued growth of the company along
with it posted increased in efficiency and decreases
in waste since 2000. All of these accomplishments were
highlighted in this feature article.

operates four production facilities. This includes its 200,000+ square foot flagship facility and corporate office in Avon, Indiana.
Other plants are located in Lafayette, Indiana (pie and cake production); Denver, Colorado (bagel production);
and Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada (fruit pie production).
